PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Both France and the United States embody an experiment in democratic government, characterized by the pursuit of universal human rights. Both countries mark revolutionary steps forward towards an egalitarian society, yet also see profound failures. This project will provide students the opportunity to reflect upon the progress and failures of both France and the US by examining Paris.
This project will offer students a uniquely structured exploration of Paris. Over Under Paris is an interdisciplinary investigation of the people, neighborhoods, government, culture and history of the French capital. While providing certain required guidelines, the project is structured in an open manner that enables student participants to emphasize their respective disciplinary interests as they relate to the pursuit of universal human rights.
It is the students’ mission to investigate, discover and document Paris by way of the Métro as it navigates over and under Paris. Students are encouraged to make comparisons to the United States.
The nature of student reflection must be broad and profound, and not exclusively personal. Students should address connections in society and culture across time. Students should name specific personal experiences with places or artworks that stimulated their reflection. This project should not be a diary (not about clubbing, shopping, or general experiences).
In the Over Under Paris Project, students are not limited to one topic, but rather should address multiple issues. Research must be rigorous.
METRO DE PARIS
The Métro de Paris has 14 major lines, with 300 different stations. Inaugurated in 1900, it transports 4.5 million passengers a day, for an annual total of 1.5 billion. The lines form a spider web design that spiral out from Châtelet – Les Halles, the largest underground station in the world.
The demographics of the Métro are arguably its most compelling aspect. Parisians and visitors of all classes, nationalities, ethnicities, religions, races, incomes, educational levels, ages, and gender ride the Métro. It is perhaps one of the most integrated environments in the world. That being true, it also reveals deep divides. Every line and every station has its own unique identity.
STRUCTURE OF EXPLORATION
Students will form groups of 3 to 4 students. Each group will select one Parisian Métro ligne. Over the course of the class’ month stay in Paris, student groups must explore and document their respective ligne. Each student must select 10 stations to explore.
The nature of student reflection must be broad and profound, and not exclusively personal. Students should address connections in society and culture across time. This project should not be a diary. Research must be rigorous.
Although exploration is done in groups, projects are individual. Students must include their respective Metro Ligne in their project, but are not limited to them.

FORMAT OF WEBPAGE
Students must create a webpage with text and images and/or videos. The research must be thorough. The webpage must be public. Students must create the blog on miamiinmiami.com
Students must post a link to the webpage on the class WhatsApp chat.
The project must also be submitted as a Word document to turnitin.com through Canvas.
This is the major project for the semester. It must be a minimum of 2,000 words.
CITATIONS
Students must cite all sources in MLA Format (in-text citations required).
Similar to a research paper, all sources must be cited for all project formats. If you utilize an existing film for inspiration or incorporate clips or pictures from someone else, you must cite those. Failure to do is plagiarism.
GRADING CRITERIA
These following factors will be considered in determining the project grade.
1. Research! The student must demonstrate a thoroughly researched knowledge of subjects.
2. The student must tackle Big Ideas-culture, history, religion, philosophy, economic disparity, sexuality, gender, race, to name a few.
3. The student should not shy away from controversial subjects or opinions.
4. The student should explain the nature of her/his connection to the subject.
5. Subjects should be discussed in a broader cultural and historical context. Others should be able to relate to the points made in the project.
6. Students should name the specific city, building, artwork, experience that prompted their reflection.
7. Students should aim for originality in text and in the photo.
8. The student is not expected to be a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Writing nor Photography. S/he is only expected to put forth maximum effort.
