JOHN WILLIAM BAILLY BIO
John William Bailly (b. 1968, UK) is a British-French–American artist and professor based in Lyon and Miami. He received his MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University School of Art and a BA in Art History from Florida International University. He has been a Faculty Fellow of the Honors College at FIU since 2004. His work explores history and culture, with an emphasis on the Transatlantic dialogue. His large oil paintings and small mixed media works on paper explore the question of how we are who we are in relation to history, place, and culture. His works have been exhibited at Zillman Museum of Art, Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Art, John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) as well as other venues in the US and France. Bailly was the inaugural Charles Deering McCormick Fellow Artist in Residence in Miami. His residency was documented in the short film “John William Bailly: In Situ” by independent filmmaker Jorge Gonzalez-Graupera. He has been awarded the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists, a State of Florida Individual Artist Grant, and a Miami-Dade County Individual Artist Grant.
In 2007, Bailly and critically acclaimed poet Richard Blanco produced a collaborative project, Place of Mind. At FIU, Bailly was Faculty Director of France, Italy, and Spain Study Abroad for 15 years and currently teaches two innovative seminars about the culture and history of Miami. He has been a Lecturer on Azamara Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Ponant Cruises, and Princess Cruises, travelling throughout the world. He has been awarded two Excellence in Teaching awards and a European Union grant for course development. His work was recently acquired by the Frost Museum of Art, Perez Art Museum of Miami, the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum and the Zillman Art Museum in Maine. John William Bailly’s work is available at CLAMP in New York City.
Basé en Floride -Miami- et en France -Lyon-, John William Bailly mène une triple carrière d’artiste, de professeur d’université et de conférencier. Né au Royaume-Uni, d’une mère américaine et d’un père français, il a obtenu sa maîtrise en beaux-arts (MFA) à l’Université de Yale. Professeur depuis 2003 au Honors College de la Florida International University, il a dirigé pendant plus de quinze ans la section des études à l’étranger pour la France, l’Italie et l’Espagne. Désormais, il donne dans l’intervalle des semestres des conférences sur des navires de croisière du monde entier. John W. Bailly a remporté plusieurs prix dans les champs artistique et pédagogique, dont deux prix d’excellence en Enseignement ; il a été choisi pour inaugurer le programme d’artiste en résidence McCormick Fellow au Deering Estate. Le film In-Situ (2023) de Jorge Gonzalez-Graupera, consacré à l’art et la de John Bailly, a remporté deux Emmy Awards.
