The FIU Honors College Miami in Miami class with Professor John William Bailly provides students with an immersive experience into the authentic culture and nature of Miami. Class meetings are off campus and students need to provide their own transportation. Generally admission fees are waived, but sometimes students may need to pay an admission fee.

COCONUT GROVE
Miami: Coconut Grove Lecture Notes
CORAL GABLES MUSEUM, MIRACLE MILE, & BILTMORE
Miami in Miami will discover the history of Coral Gables with a Walking Lecture of Miracle Mile and the surrounding historic sites. The class will end with a tour of the Biltmore Hotel.
Miami: Coral Gables Lecture Notes
DEERING ESTATEMiami in Miami will complete an approximately five mile hike through several tropical ecosystems at the Deering Estate. The Deering Estate is a 460 acre park, with a large nature preserve. Students will have the opportunity to experience the nature of Miami in its pristine state. The group will hike through a Tropical Hardwood Hammock, slog (hiking through water) through a Mangrove Forest, hike through Pine Rocklands, slog in Cutler Creek, and enter a cave. The class will encounter a vast diversity of flora and fauna. These may include insects, an incredible array of birds, coyotes, beavers, crocodiles, tortoises, and snakes.
Miami: Deering Estate Lecture Notes
DEERING ESTATE – CHICKEN KEYMiami in Miami will canoe one mile from the Deering Estate main park out to Chicken Key in Biscayne Bay and back to the Deering Estate. Chicken Key is an uninhabited island of great importance to the flora and fauna of Miami, including endangered species. The group will spend four hours on Chicken Key collecting marine debris/trash, picnicking, and swimming. There are no restroom facilities or other services. The class meeting will be on a deserted tropical island. The class will encounter a vast diversity of flora and fauna. These may include insects, an incredible array of birds, manatees, sharks, crocodiles, sea turtles, tortoises, and snakes.
DOWNTOWN MIAMI & HISTORY MIAMI
Miami in Miami will walk through the urban core of Miami, engaging the beautiful and tragic of the history of the Magic City. The class will navigate approximately five miles of parks, alleys, bridges, and traffic to discover the hidden wonders of Miami. In addition, the class will trace the history of the land now known as Miami from 10,000 BCE to the present day in the HistoryMiami museum.
Miami: Downtown Miami Lecture Notes
EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARKMiami in Miami will do a deep dive into the heart of Everglades National Park. The class will complete a Slough Slog (a wet hike) into a Cypress Dome with a Park Ranger; students will be waist deep in the Everglades. The group will also walk on the boardwalk of the Anhinga Trail. The Everglades are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, “Everglades National Park is the largest designated sub-tropical wilderness reserve on the North American continent. Its juncture at the interface of temperate and sub-tropical America, fresh and brackish water, shallow bays and deeper coastal waters creates a complex of habitats supporting a high diversity of flora and fauna.” The class will encounter a vast diversity of flora and fauna. These may include insects, an incredible array of birds, deer, bears, alligators, and snakes.

Miami in Miami will explore Miami through the Miami Metrorail. Utilizing day passes, the group will jump on and off the metro in locations varying from Dadeland to Coconut Grove to Brickell to Overtown to Hialeah.
OVERTOWN

OVERTOWN-LOTUS VILLAGE
Expanding and developing students’ sense of community is an integral component of Miami in Miami. Students will work the kitchens, facilitate workshops, and be on kitchen duty in Lotus Village. “The Lotus House is a unique resource center and residential facility serving homeless women and infants in the heart of the historic African American district of Overtown, Miami, an area suffering from extreme poverty.”
RUBELL MUSEUM
Miami in Miami will visit the contemporary art colection at the Rubell Museum in Allapattah. “The Rubell Museum represents a new kind of institution serving as an advocate for a diverse mix of contemporary artists and resource for both the public and art world to engage in a dialogue with them.”
SOUTH BEACHMiami in Miami will be introduced to the history of Miami Beach and its Art Deco architecture on a walking lecture. The class will walk approximately three miles from South Pointe Pier along Ocean Drive to Lincoln Road Mall.

Miami in Miami will visit Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, understanding the social and cultural transformation James Deering and Paul Chalfin initiated in Miami.
